Promotional Package

This pop promo is by the band Enter Shikari released the in 2010.
The CD and print advert look very much alike in terms of colour scheme which is the black and purple and font in grey.
In a way Enter Shikari are similar to out band as it is the same kind of music also the same audience.
Enter Shikari promote themselves with things like music videos, interviews and posters of magazines like Kerrang and Rock Sound which are purchased by their target audience also their music would be played on TV channels like MTV2, Kerrang, Q.
They would also promote themselves with many live gigs and going to music festivals like download.

Analyse a Music Video

Enter Shikari- Destabilise

I picked this music video because of I found it interesting and different.
For Mes-en-scene, it is quite simple, it is mostly filmed in a building like a warehouse with lights as props as well as normal clothing and hats. Also the music instruments.

The cinematography is interesting as there are all kinds of shorts such as close ups and long shots, there are also tracking shots throughout as well as low angle to camera is also hand held in some shots which makes it shaky.

As for editing, is is continuous and there is a blot of black and white, then back to colour, the word "record" was edited on to make it look like a home made movie, there is also a number of speed ups and slow motions.

There isnt really a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals or the music and visuals.
The genre is sort of rock/hardcore music.
There is a both performance and concepts because it shows them paying their instruments, but also them breaking into the ware house. It puts across that idea of them being cool and crazy and fearless, which would very much appeal to a younger audience,

Analyse Music Video

Amaranth by Nightwish

I chose to analyse this music video as i found interesting, the face that it looks just like a fiction movie.
The sused of props and custumes allows them to go back in time with the narrative, with the agel wings and the old, unindustrialized location.
The band memebers themself dont seem to have put a lot of effort or placed a lot on importance on their outfits.

The camera moves agrressively durring the perforace parts and the camera vibrates, as it is a metal, song, there are pans of the narrative locations as well as an interesting areal shot of the angel on the rocks, there are mid shots of each band meber playing their intruments and headbanging. which suit the type of music this band plays.

This is a powerful video because it is fun and look a lot like a short movie, almost like Lord of the Rings, and it shows the band for who they are and shows them as simple and it is good because it show the band for who their really are.

Analyse Music Video

Rabbit Heart by Florence & The Machine.

The Mis-En-Scene in this music video is quite powerful with beautiful costumes, flow as the people dance around, and the make up it not too much as the whole video has a feeling of a secret garden where people are happy, and the video opens close up with a sequin, lace veil between Florence and the camera.
Some of the costumes, especially Florence's dont really make a statement, but other characters in the videos wear top hats.
As for props they use flower baskets and people twirling fabric around as well as feeding each other grapes and a big banquet which brings they feeling of royalty.
The lighting in this music video is also really bright which gives it a feeling of being in a dream.

For cinematography they used a number of shots to portray the world the characters are in with shots like close us of her face, while she sings as well as when she is in the coffin, and close ups of the man playing the harp. There are also long shots of people dancing and them at the table.

The editing contains a lot of shots over each other with transparency, which looks pretty and is more entertaining to look at, as well as warm colors in it, which make it look very dream-like and comfortable, the editing gets a lot more fast paced towards the end of the song, and there are more cuts during the chorus.

In general there isn't a very big relationship between the the lyrics and the visuals, although the music matches the visuals it is quite a bright feel-good song and that is portrayed by the music video.

In this music videos Florence and the machine are represented as a kind of "different" but still mainstream band, the other band members aren't shown in the video so there is a element of mystery and people wonder if it is just Florence Welch or are there others.
They are an indie band who are portrayed as sort of surreal, and the theme is coherent throughout their other music videos.

I think that Florence is not sexualized in this music video at all, it doesn't have much to do with looking sexy but to instead take the audience out of reality.

I do. however think this music video reminds me a little of Alice in Wonderland, and the idea of another reality in which people eat in vast gardens and dance around.
And this music video is mostly narrative based and concept based.

This music video, I think promotes the band very well, and it looks good.
I would say that for the audience Florence and the Machine aims for being an indie band it is quite well done and the mise en scene looks good, which is something that people always look at.

History of Music Videos

A music video is a short film that advertises an artist, a song and an album. They are now very important in the music industry and make a lot of money. They became what they are todays due to the development of Music Television (MTV).
MTV started its broadcast in 1981 is the USA. And due to constant broadcasting of music vedeos on MTV, more of them had to be produced.
This was a new side to the music industry as it meat artists could now show off they appealing looks(especially women), this may have lead to exploitation of artists or the consumer because, even though the sex-appeal sells.

In Britain music videos began being shown on Top Of The Pops in the 70s, due to the success and increased sales, bands started making videos to show on Pop of the Pops.

Now, the music video is as important as the song and audiences anticipate them as for artists like Lady Gaga's Telephone and a lot of money is put into making these. They can be seen as a pure for of commerse to sell the album of as a form of art.

Introduction

I am now on the second year of my A Levels, in which I will be producing a Pop Promo package, which will include a music video, a magazine aadvert and album cover.
We will be working with a band from college to do this and they are in the seocnd year of their course the band is called "House" and the song we will be making the video for it "Kiss me" by New found glory. But before we will have to analyse music vidoes and different music genres and what their codes and conventions are. We also have to create the magazine and album cover that compliments the music video, this will all be done in our groups.
